Introduction

The Seminar on Malay Woodcarving: The Legacy of Nik Rashiddin Bin Nik Hussein, a master carver from Kelantan will be held at Kampong Kandis, Kelantan from 23rd November – 26th November 2008. The seminar is the culmination of the research project on documentation and preservation of traditional Malay woodcarving by the Institute of the Malay World and Civilisation (ATMA), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.

The project has been undertaken with the cooperation of Kandis Resource Centre Sdn. Bhd., based in Kampung Kandis, Bachok, Kelantan. This collection comprises fine examples of wood carvings by the master carver himself and those that he collected, his drawings and sketches, books and other printed materials and photographs. The larger part of the collection is kept at Kandis Resource Centre in Kandis, Bachok. A digital database of the collection will developed and will be made accessible online through ATMA’s malaycivilization.com portal and the Kandis Resource Centre website, Semangatkayu.com. This seminar is intended not only to report on the progress of the project so far and to highlight the significance of Nik Rashiddin’s legacy but also to add to the body of knowledge and literature on traditional Malay woodcarving.
